Long Bio
R T Penwill is a contemporary artist whose work is shaped by a lifelong engagement with movement, structure and visual storytelling. Before turning fully to visual art, he trained in dance and figure skating, disciplines that instilled a commitment to repetition, precision and the translation of internal experience into external form. Growing up with a cartoonist father, he absorbed the rhythms, humour and visual economy of comics, influences that continue to inform his approach.
Penwill studied fine art in Cheltenham, specialising in printmaking, and later expanded his practice through painting, illustration, scriptwriting, filmmaking and design. This broad creative background underpins the layered sensibility of his work, where clarity of form often sits alongside emotional intensity and dry wit.
Since 2011 he has worked from a compact studio in the south‑west of England, a space whose constraints have shaped the scale and logic of his output. Parenthood, and later the discovery of his autistic identity, introduced new dimensions to his practice, sharpening his attention to detail and deepening his interest in how experience can be translated into visual form.
Penwill’s work spans narrative and conceptual modes, unified by a distinctive visual clarity and an interest in the emotional and cultural undercurrents embedded in everyday life.
Artist Statement
My practice begins with whatever catches my attention: an image, a memory, a feeling, a structure. I isolate these moments or fragments, break them apart, and rebuild them in order to reveal what sits beneath the surface and to make sense of what they hold — sometimes even to regain a measure of control. This process underpins everything I make, from the deeply personal to the rigorously conceptual.
In some works, I expose the tension, humour, or private meaning embedded in everyday scenes or cultural imagery. In others, I explore rules, systems, or their dysfunction, using structure as a way to generate variation, clarity, or emotional charge. Whether the subject is autobiographical, observational, or abstract, my method remains consistent: deconstruct, reconstruct, reveal.
My work moves fluidly between narrative and conceptual modes, but the process remains constant: take it apart, rebuild it, understand it.
