Honiton Toyshop
(Hidden high street series)
Honiton Toy Shop is my attempt to capture a little of the charm and quiet magic of a much‑loved local spot. In this silkscreen print, I’ve focused on the shop’s bay windows and cheerful façade, hoping to evoke some of the nostalgia and sense of possibility that places like this often hold. As I worked, I wasn’t aiming for a perfect likeness so much as trying to express the feeling of anticipation children might have when stepping inside - a feeling that’s woven into so many British high streets.
The piece is quite simple in its structure, but I tried to bring in small imaginative touches. I built the colours up in translucent layers of silkscreen ink, letting them interact gently to create a soft, luminous effect. The puffy clouds and the warm tone of the antique white paper add a lightness that, I hope, supports the slightly whimsical mood. Together, these elements let the building take on a bit of personality - still familiar, but with a hint of enchantment.
Inside the windows, I added a small party of toys, a playful suggestion of the life within. The simplified shapes of toys and boxes, along with a burst of disco‑like colour, create a little celebratory scene. It’s an imagined interior, but one that reflects the excitement and sense of discovery children often feel in shops like this. That contrast between the steady exterior and the lively interior brings a bit of movement and narrative into the piece.
Honiton Toy Shop sits on the lighter, more whimsical end of my Hidden High Street series, but it still fits within my broader aim of appreciating the everyday spaces that quietly shape our communities. For me, this print is a small tribute to the kinds of local shops that stay with us—places tied to childhood memories, curiosity, and simple joy. It’s a way of honouring the imagination and nostalgia that live at the heart of the high street.
This work is from the Hidden High Street series - an exploration of the often unnoticed spaces and everyday encounters that form the essence of our shared communities.
