Dot Combinations: Black Dot
14 January – 29 January 2026
Online Exhibition by R T Penwill
Dot Combinations: Black Dot marks the first public presentation of R T Penwill’s new modular colour series. The exhibition introduces Black Dot, a four‑layered silkscreen print in which Navy Blue, Indigo, Dull Pink, and Black are overlaid to form a dense, complex black circle.
Dot Combinations is an ongoing exploration of colour, selection, and the architecture of modular form. Each work comprises a series of single silkscreened circles — precise, tactile units from which combinations, rhythms, and variations can unfold. The series invites viewers to consider how meaning emerges not from the mark alone, but from the choices surrounding it: colour, arrangement, sequence, and restraint.
Black Dot, the first work in the series, isolates a single 37.8cm circle, printed in four successive layers — Navy Blue, Indigo, Dull Pink, and Black — each deposited in the same position. The resulting black is constructed rather than given: a surface built from colour, pressure, and repetition. Presented within a 52.3 × 51.5 cm painted wooden frame, the work becomes both an origin point and a proposition.
By presenting the system’s simplest element on its own, Black Dot draws attention to the tension between potential and completion. It is self‑contained yet anticipatory — a single decision that implies many more.
This exhibition marks the beginning of the Dot Combinations series. Read more about the Dot Combinations series.
