Dot combinations
A modular system where a single circle, constant in scale, becomes a shared space for choice, variation and infinite possibility.
Dot Combinations is built around a modular system with the capacity to generate an infinite range of moods and meanings. Each work begins with a circle at a constant scale, a defined field of space, and a palette shaped by my own way of being and perceiving the world. The system is open: grids, colours, and arrangements can be selected by me or by others, and every configuration is regarded as equal. Participation simply extends the logic of the work — the system exists, and others may choose to engage with it.
The palette and the off‑white ground are mixed by eye rather than formula, allowing natural variation to emerge over time — small shifts in tone that reflect the human nature of the process. Each work is printed by hand, layer by layer, producing subtle differences in density and edge. These variations are accepted and embraced as part of the system’s identity.
Although the elements are simple, the outcomes can vary widely. Depending on the arrangement, a composition might feel humorous, abrupt, tense, melancholic, balanced, or deliberately unsettled. The system doesn’t prescribe a mood or message; it provides the conditions in which a broad range of responses can emerge.
Dot Combinations is open‑ended by design. The rules are clear and the possibilities endless. The work becomes a meeting point between structure and choice, and offers a way of sharing authorship while maintaining the clarity of the underlying concept.
